On this race Dustin is riding for Team Type 1, a team of cyclists who, in addition to negotiating the rigors typically encountered in competitive cycling, are further distinguished by their overcoming the special considerations presented by diabetes.

Team Type 1′s goal is to complete this year’s race in 5 days and 2 hours.

We wish Dustin, his teammates, and all of the other participants and supporters a safe and successful event!

Rocky Mountain Omnium 2010

Greg Scanlan phones home with some running updates to his racing the Crit and Road Race at the Rocky Mountain Omnium in Glenwood Springs during this rainy and chilly weekend.

Greg relates that at yesterday’s (6/12) SM-3 crit, the “rain and attacks never stopped!,” but he nonetheless held at the front for the entire race to finish 5th.

In reflecting on having covered every attack, Greg says that he “could have been been smarter.” But Scanlan is relatively new to the road racing scene, so while is he building experience with identifying the truly fast riders around whom to strategize his races, he apparently will leave little room for other regrets.

Looking ahead to today’s Road Race, while Greg is “satisfied with [last night's] effort,” he is hoping for some good legs to help further build his road racing resumè.

UPDATE: Greg took 8th overall in the Omnium after finishing 12th in the Road Race which was riddled with a crash.

Greg reports the Road Race was “a good power course” constructed of 3×20 mile out-and-backs, during which he “went with several attacks, none of which stuck,” to then “set up for a perfect bunch sprint riding about 5th wheel until wham! Carnage everywhere!”

Greg Scanlan

Check back for Greg’s additional results following this coming weekend’s Winter Park Hill Climb (rescheduled to 6/19 from this past weekend) and Niwot Crit, to be followed by the Crested Butte Fat Tire/Wild Cat 40 on the 26th.

Colorado Marathon Supported by Peloton-Specialized

What more could any marathon/half-marathon/5K/10K athlete want from the picture-perfect morning on which to run the 2010 Colorado Marathon?

How about a unique bicycle escort by the cyclists of Peloton-Specialized?

Ahead of the lead runners followed by the teeming packs coming through the Poudre Canyon and Poudre Trail, team riders Dustin Folger, Kurt Ireland, Nick Davis, Sam Acheson, Bruce Runnels, and Jim Fu helped clear traffic off the race course, motivate the athletes to strong finishes, and clean up after the race was completed.

Congratulations to all of the winners and participants, whether qualifying for the Boston Marathon or entering their first race, and many thanks to the fellow supporters and sponsors of this race series run on America’s Most Scenic Course!

ACA Cyclocross Coming Back to Fort Collins

Sorry about the delay in posts – 2010 is on us.  We’re ramping up for a new season.

You might be aware of a group that’s working pretty hard to bring bike racing back to Fort Collins.  Called the NCCE – or Northern Colorado Cycling Events – the group is dedicated to developing a thriving cycling race culture in northern Colorado.
Through a lot of hard work and dedication from quite a few of your local cycling guys, 2010 is already shaping up to be a monumental year for having fun on the bicycles up here.  Recently we’ve added another exciting event – an ACA sanctioned cyclocross race.  I won’t go into details on the process, but of 26 available race dates, the ACA had over 100 race date requests.  With that kind of response, the ACA was initially set to allocate the dates to promoters that had already proven themselves.  Had the ACA had stuck to their original intention, we would have been long off the list.  But they didn’t.  And we have a date.
Now that we have the date, our goal is to put on the best darned cross race on the ACA calendar.  And this is the reason for the post.  We need to secure an awesome venue.  So I’m reaching out to the community to see if anyone has an idea or connection to a location that’s in Fort Collins, able to handle 300-500 people on race day, and is excited to have a cyclocross event  on their property.
If you have any suggestions, please feel free to contact us. And if you’re reading this and are interested in being involved with this event at a sponsorship level, please feel free to contact us as well.
This event will be a joint effort by Team Peloton-Specialized and the Fort Collins Cycling Team.  Below is a contact for each squad.  Feel free to drop either of us a line with your thoughts.
Thanks all!

A Rainbow of Charity Rides

When only one other person showed at the Oval this morning, I headed toward Estes Park for a little high altitude pain and suffering.  The ride went well  for 90k, up and down the Glen Haven Road in the rain, with good sensations after a week of rest.  I did not fuel well today before or during my ride, though, and had a serious bonk in Eden Valley.  The wife and I rushed to Five Guys for a burger IV though, and after a quick nap, all is well.

I’ll have a serious training block next week, culminating with a day on the Dead Dog RR course in Wyoming on Friday, so it was nice to get my legs spinning uphill hard today.

I passed a triple bike heading up to Horsetooth Reservoir this morning.  The two adults on the rig bore bright purple and yellow jerseys of the Triple Bypass.  Rolling around the south end of the reservoir, I smiled and waved at three riders in orange Copper Triangle jerseys.  I climbed over to Inlet Bay past another Triple Bypasser with a different jersey before passing another Copper Triangler near Horsetooth Mountain Park.  Heading up Eden Valley southwest of Masonville, I passed yet another charity rider wearing a Courage Classic jersey.  I would pass no fewer than 10 more charity riders sporting their favorite ride jersey over the rest of my ride.

This got me thinking about how many different charity rides we have in Colorado.  The short list includes the Bypass, Triangle, and Courage Classic, plus the Colorado Bike MS ride and Ride the Rockies.  Countless smaller rides exist throughout the year funding everything from sustainable development to muscular distrophy.  “Good for these folks.  They’re riding for great causes and proud to show it,” I thought.

What’s your favorite charity ride jersey and do you wear it on the road?  Are you planning to ride in any charity rides in 2009?

If you’d like a great training opportunity for your next charity ride, come out on Sunday June 7 for the second ride in our Colorado Bike MS Training Series.  Details are available at our homepage.  We had a great turnout for the first ride and look forward to spending more road time with each of you next weekend!
